Field Staff Needed
May 1 – August 31, 2007

Golden Crowned kinglet? The Beaverhill Bird Observatory has been conducting research in and around Alberta for the past 25 years. Our main area of interest is monitoring songbird populations during the migration and breeding seasons. This includes mist netting and banding, and daily census (point counts and walking surveys). Recently we have also implemented raptor-monitoring programs such as Northern Saw-whet Owl fall migration monitoring.

We are looking for one highly motivated individual to work at our banding station for the summer of 2006 with our bander-in-charge. You will be required to attend a banding workshop in Lesser Slave Lake in early May (expenses covered). This job has the possibility of a two month extension into September and October.

Good bird identification skills (by sound and sight), knowledge of avian ecology and a willingness to learn more about bird life and research are all requirements of a successful applicant. Our site is situated on Beaverhill Lake in a Natural Area, accommodations are available, conditions are somewhat rustic (solar and propane).

Aside from our core research projects (Migration monitoring and MAPS) we also have an interpretation program in place. This aspect of the job will draw on the interpersonal skills of our staff. Good communication skills and the ability to talk in front of groups are important characteristics of our staff. Staff are also responsible for writing spring and summer reports and should have good writing skills.
